AHO BOARD TO CONSIDER PAY CHANGES
The AHO Board of Directors will be studying referee pay to consider adjustments beginning with the 2008-09 season. A committee to examine changes will be formed at the January board meeting (see calendar at left). Members with an interest in this subject are encouraged to attend the January meeting.
BURGESS' WHISTLE GETS LITTLE REST
Michael Burgess officiated 488 games scheduled by AHO during the 2006-07 season, giving him the distinction of working the most games of any AHO referee. Burgess has been a USA Hockey certified official for five years. He officiates youth and adult games year round. "If I'm off the ice for a solid week, I go into withdrawal," he said.
The next busiest AHO official worked 400 games last season.
PROOF OF CERTIFICATION REQUIRED FOR HIGH SCHOOL OFFICIALS
Officials who work high school games will now be required to provide proof of National Federation of State High Schools certification before AHO will schedule them to work games effective Dec. 17, 2007. A certification card copy or fax will need to be sent to the AHO high school scheduler. This decision by the AHO board will also be in effect for the 2008-09 season and beyond.
UP-TO-DATE E-MAIL ADDRESSES NEEDED
Several officials are not providing the AHO database manager with current e-mail addresses. This creates problems processing payroll and problems notifying officials about game schedules.
Officials who have not provided the database manager with current e-mail addresses will be deactivated and unable to use the online RefRanger scheduling system. Members can check and change their e-mail addresses online at the AHO RefRanger site at http://www.oswebs.com/aho/ See the "change your personal info." link on the left column of the main page. Changes can also be e-mailed to the manager at aho@gci.net

BEHIND THE STRIPES
Referee profile
JOSH HANSON
AGE: 13
YEARS OFFICIATING: 2
OCCUPATION: Freshman at West High School.
Q. Why did you become an official?
A. I primarily wanted to start officiating because I thought it would be a good way to make some money while doing something I enjoyed doing - being on the ice. But I also wanted to use it as an opportunity to learn the game better. It has forced me to start seeing more of the ice and have a better understanding of the rules.
Q. How did you get interested in hockey?
A. When I was five-years-old, my family moved to Anchorage from Kodiak. I was at the Dimond Center and saw people skating at the rink, and thought it would be fun to play hockey. My dad and I would also watch NHL games on television. At first, it was harder than I thought, but it was still a lot of fun and I stuck with it.
